Gravy and cricket – perfect!
With the inevitable inclusion of Durham seamer Graham Onions to the England squad for the first Test against West Indies starting next week, one thing that immediately came to mind for me …..will the prolific Antiguan Gravy (full name Labon Kenneth Blackburn Leeweltine Buckonon) be jumping on a plane and lending his gyrating hips and vocal support to a resurgent West Indies?
I can see the headlines now “Onion Gravy, the perfect combination”, “Onions and Gravy meet head on”, “Onions and Gravy keep it real”. It would certainly bring a whole new meaning to the luncheon interval!
Onions, who will debut against the visitors next week if he can impress Flower, was part of the England set up three years ago for the one day internationals against Pakistan. However he failed to claim a spot in the starting 11 then and will be keen to move a step in the right direction when the final 11 are announced next week.
“I found out at half past seven this morning from Mr Miller (national selector Geoff Miller), so I was very, very pleased,” Onions told ecb.co.uk.
“I had to be a little bit quiet because the alarm hadn’t gone off yet and I’m rooming with Phil Mustard, so I didn’t want to wake him up. I was very, very excited – a little bit of a spring in my step really.”
So who will win the first Test ? Will England manage to scrape a victory without the services of Flintoff? Will Pietersen put his poor run of form in the IPL to one side and carve a great innings out of the West Indian bowlers? Only time will tell, but one thing we can be certain of – the weather will be glorious!!!!!
Don’t you just love it when you hear the other side of the phone call? The mind does boggle though; I’m sure Gordon Ramsey could do something with Flower, Mustard, Gravy and Onions – or maybe the great White chef at Hell’s Kitchen could muster something palatable up?
