India vs Sri Lanka Match scheduled: 24-12-2009 from 09:00 until 17:00India v Sri Lanka at Kolkata, 4th ODI

The Indian Cricket Team is an international cricket team representing India. It is governed by the Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI), the governing body of cricket in India. The first recorded match in India was in 1721 when a group of sailors gathered to play in Western India. However, it was only on 25th June 1932 at the famous Lord’s cricket ground in England that a national team played an official Test match. Only the sixth team to play Test cricket, India is known to be traditionally strong on its home soil while not really making an impact on away tours. In the first 50 years of their playing history, India won only 35 of the 196 matches played. In the last few years, though, much has changed. With the emergence of cricketers like Sunil Gavaskar and Kapil Dev, Indian cricket went from strength to strength. The 1983 World Cup was definitely a high point in Indian sport and not just cricket. The current team comprises of some of the world’s finest cricketers to have ever played the game. The likes of Sachin Tendulkar, Rahul Dravid, Anil Kumble and Sourav Ganguly have brought much glory for the country with their stellar performances away and at home. With the advent of the Twenty20 form of cricket, a new breed of cricketers is on its way. Mahendra Singh Dhoni, Yuvraj Singh, Irfan Pathan are just some of the names that have achieved tremendous success at the global stage. Winning the inaugural World Twenty20 in 2007 was a special moment in India’s cricketing annals. As also, beating Australia in an ODI series Down Under in 2008. The Indian Cricket Team is currently the highest paid national sports team in the world with regard to sponsorships.

The Sri Lankan Cricket Team is a national cricket team representing the island nation of Sri Lanka. The team first began playing international cricket in 1975, and were later granted Test status in 1981. The islanders had some talented cricketers in their ranks but only were transformed from the underdog status to a major cricketing nation during the nineties. The biggest achievement for Sri Lankan cricket was lifting the 1996 Cricket World Cup beating Australia in the finals, and becoming the World Champions. Ever since that shining moment, Sri Lanka has continued to throw up exciting cricketers who have immensely contributed to international cricket. Once again in 2007, the Sri Lankan team did well to reach the finals of the ICC Cricket World Cup held in the Caribbean but lost to Australia in a rain-affected match. Batting stalwarts like Aravinda de Silva, Arjuna Ranatunga, and Sanath Jayasuriya backed up by the bowling of Muttiah Muralidaran and Chaminda Vaas have been instrumental in bring many laurels to Sri Lankan cricket during the last 15 years. The current squad has an able leader in Mahela Jayawardena and boasts of a line-up consisting of Upul Tharanga, Kumar Sangakkara, Russel Arnold, Tillakaratne Dilshan, Chaminda Vaas, Lasith Malinga, Dilhara Fernando and Farveez Maharoof. Sri Lankan teams over the years have produced a number of records: the world’s highest total in a Test match: 952-6 versus India, the world’s highest score in an ODI match: 443-9 versus The Netherlands on the 4th of July 2006, and the world’s highest score in a Twenty20 match: 260-6 versus Kenya on the 14th of September 2007.

South Africa cricket coach Mickey Arthur has instructed his bowlers to make regular use of the bouncer in the one-day series against Bangladesh. The Proteas attack found success with the short ball in the recent Test series and Arthur has no doubt they can achieve similar results in the three one-dayers against the subcontinental minnows.”We devise our strategy on what teams enjoy least, and it is clear that they don’t like short pitched deliveries,” he told Die Volksblad.

The Pakistani selection in the first game came as a surprise to many an expert.
Khalid Latif (5/1 at Ladbrokes to top the batting for his side) was preferred as the opener and he went on to bat through 40 overs for his half century.
The pair played two of the best innings in the ODI format under the circumstances, and the strike-rates of almost 150 each meant that the Pakistanis managed to get to their extraordinary total.

Pakistan and New Zealand both have some inside team issues and now they need to keep themaside and play some wonderful cricket. New Zealand team will not be having any coach with them and Pakistan coach, Intikhab Alam, is more a manager than a modern-day coach. So this will be very first time that both the team are playing a coach-less tournament. It will be interesting to see whetherPakistan will be able to pull off the kiwis and take their revenge.

He looked like having got the top score for the innings, till Shahid Afridi (8/1 at Betfred to be Pakistan’s best batsman) and Kamran Akmal (7/1 at 888Sport to be Pakistan’s batsman) upset the Kiwi bowlers’ calculations.

1st ODI: India vs Australia at Vadodara : The ICC is considering a trial splitting of one-day matches into two innings of 25 overs for each team, a proposal Sachin Tendulkar had mooted earlier. Graeme Smith and Kumar Sangakkara felt the ICC Champions Trophy would be crucial in directing the future of the ODI as a viable format in international cricket. Other trials in international cricket include hosting day-night Tests, which the England board plans for next summer if approved by the ICC.

05 Oct 2009 Australia vs New Zealand Final Match, SuperSport Park, Centurion (D/N) Live action starts from: 12:30 GMT (18:00 IST)
Both teams gave satisfactory performances in the semi-finals, and both are more or less settled – even if not entirely by design.
Australia (probable): 1 Shane Watson, 2 Tim Paine (wk), 3 Ricky Ponting (capt), 4 Michael Hussey, 5 Cameron White, 6 Callum Ferguson, 7 James Hopes, 8 Mitchell Johnson, 9 Brett Lee, 10 Nathan Hauritz, 11 Peter Siddle.
A discussion on allrounder Brendon Diamanti has its merits – Neil Broom hasn’t had much to do in the tournament – but New Zealand are not likely to tinker with a winning combination. And the way Elliott came through the semi-final, a big worry for them has been taken care of.
New Zealand (probable): 1 Brendon McCullum (wk), 2 Aaron Redmond, 3 Martin Guptill, 4 Ross Taylor, 5 Neil Broom, 6 Grant Elliot, 7 James Franklin, 8 Daniel Vettori (capt), 9 Kyle Mills, 10 Shane Bond, 11 Ian Butler.
Underdogs in films make a mockery of the form book. Exhibit 1: New Zealand come to the Champions Trophy, sans superstars, sans high ICC rankings, and after being well and truly battered for more than a month in the sapping heat of Sri Lanka. They are – it is fair to say – the outsiders in this tournament.
Underdogs in the movies start out of their depth, find the happy knack of winning, and then start liking what they feel. Exhibit 2: New Zealand are outclassed by South Africa on a true Centurion pitch. Then Sri Lanka, fooled by the earlier two pitches at the Wanderers, put New Zealand in, and discover they have given their opponents first use of a batting beauty. Against England, New Zealand get a spitting beauty of a pitch, call right at the toss, and run through the batting.
Underdogs in the movies are hit by injuries, handicaps, and miseries, but every setback inspires them. Exhibit 3: New Zealand lose Jacob Oram before their campaign starts. Jesse Ryder pulls his left abductor muscle during the Sri Lanka game, but before leaving plays the kind of innings that must have led to the coining of the phrase “beware the wounded batsman”. Then Daryl Tuffey, at the time looking their best bowler, breaks his hand while fielding and is ruled out for the rest of the tournament. Next up, Grant Elliott, hero of the win against England, breaks his thumb, but braves the injury to score a heroic unbeaten 75 in the semi-final.
The real villains start appearing only in the later stages of underdog movies. Exhibit 4: On paper Pakistan have everything they need to end this underdog tale, but their occasional overconfidence and exceptional play from the underdogs take New Zealand to the final.
Underdogs in the movies meet the biggest, scariest villain right at the end. Exhibit 5: It is always Australia’s fate, or that of any champion team, that their excellence, consistency, their hard work, will always be seen as villainous in romantic underdog stories. We can also conveniently forget that they too lost three of their most important players – Nathan Bracken, Michael Clarke and Brad Haddin – in the lead-up to the tournament. Champions, though, don’t deserve such considerations. Every good underdog story needs a mean villain, and Australia have rarely failed to oblige at world events.
If more context is needed, st them. MoNew Zealand have historically seen Australia as big brothers, and have always sought to bring their best againreover, New Zealand are yet to beat Australia in a tournament final, and have lost six times (tournaments with more than one final have been considered as one). Centurion will not provide them with a freak pitch either. It’s all stacked up against New Zealand this time, and no self-respecting underdog story would have it any other way.
How good this story is will be known by Monday evening, or rather early on Tuesday morning in Australia and New Zealand.
